Functional diversity and trait composition of vascular plant and <i>Sphagnum</i> moss communities during peatland succession across land uplift regions

چکیده

Most of the carbon accumulated into peatlands is derived from Sphagnum mosses. During peatland development, relative share vascular plants and mosses in plant community changes, which impacts ecosystem functions. Little known on successional development functional traits or diversity peatlands, although this could be a key for understanding mechanisms behind resistance to climate change. Here we aim assess how functionality successive communities change along autogenic associated environmental gradients, namely peat thickness pH, determine whether trait trade-offs during succession are analogous between moss communities. We collected data gradients post-glacial rebound areas coastal Finland, Sweden Russia, altogether 47 peatlands. This allowed us analyse changes community-weighted mean values (diversity traits) development. Our results show comparative acquisitive species conservative both However, had higher than was seen larger proportion intraspecific variation turnover traits, while proportions were opposite plants. Similarly, increased occurred measured showed phylogenetic signal. More so, common old stages, Ericacae Sphagna subgroup Acutifolia detected as most similar their neighbours. Synthesis. vegetation leads dominance accustomed high stress. At same time, ecological engineering variability, together indicate towards perturbations.

Differences in forest plant functional trait distributions across land-use and productivity gradients.

PREMISE OF STUDY Plant functional traits are commonly used as proxies for plant responses to environmental challenges, yet few studies have explored how functional trait distributions differ across gradients of land-use change. By comparing trait distributions in intact forests with those across land-use change gradients, we can improve our understanding of the ways land-use change alters the d...

Land use change alters functional gene diversity, composition and abundance in Amazon forest soil microbial communities.

Land use change in the Amazon rainforest alters the taxonomic structure of soil microbial communities, but whether it alters their functional gene composition is unknown. We used the highly parallel microarray technology GeoChip 4.0, which contains 83,992 probes specific for genes linked nutrient cycling and other processes, to evaluate how the diversity, abundance and similarity of the targete...

Land-use intensification reduces functional redundancy and response diversity in plant communities.

Ecosystem resilience depends on functional redundancy (the number of species contributing similarly to an ecosystem function) and response diversity (how functionally similar species respond differently to disturbance). Here, we explore how land-use change impacts these attributes in plant communities, using data from 18 land-use intensity gradients that represent five biomes and > 2800 species...
